1) Steve Miller
How Ammonite Science Informs Ammonite Art
How the science of fossil ammonite evolution and the language of ammonite ornamentation inspire fossil art. Ammonites were squid-like creatures that lived in ornately decorated shells. Ammonite fossils provided geologists with an easy way to identify the age of rocks by identifying the fossils contained in them. A very unusual and technical language developed to describe ammonites provides a good guide for sculpture.
Bio: Steve is an independent avocational paleontologist and neophyte sculptor who lives in Colorado Springs with his wife, Jo-Anne. Steve has been studying the Western Interior Seaway for 15 years, and is an active member and field trip leader of the Western Interior Paleontological Society.
2) Patric Ryan
Nikola Tesla – The man, the myth, the legend, and his time here in Colorado Springs
Who is Nikola Tesla? What did he discover and invent? What devices and technologies do we still use today that he is directly responsible for? Why was he erased from history? How can we honor him and his legacy today?
Bio: Patric Ryan is a U.S. Army combat veteran who received a Fine Arts degree from the University of Georgia. He is currently writing the play and book series Mark Twain and the War of Wizards, which is a historical fantasy about Nikola Tesla and his rivalry with Thomas Edison, narrated by Mark Twain! He came to Colorado Springs to do research on Nikola Tesla and fell in love with the area. He is currently working with world famous, artist and sculptor, Stan Mullins to build a statue of Nikola Tesla for the city of Colorado Springs.
